Childhood and Early Life of Andrew Wiggins

Andrew Wiggins DunkAndrew Wiggins was born and raised in Canada.  He grew up just outside of the Toronto area in the Vaughan, Ontario region.  Andrew came from a good set of genes.  Being a successful athlete ran in his family.  His father was an NBA player as well by the name of Mitchell Wiggins.  As if that wasn’t enough, his mother Marita Payne Wiggins was an Olympic track and field star for the Canadian team.

Although he was always interested in sports, it wasn’t until he was nine years old that Andrew Wiggins started to play organized basketball.  His impressive vertical leap was on display at a young age.  In fact,  the first time he dunked a basketball was at the young age of thirteen!  Andrew hit a growth spurt when he turned 14 which brought him to 6 feet 6 inches tall.  His jumping ability combined with his length made him a force on the court.  Andrew Wiggins split his high school years between Canada and The United States.  His Freshman and Sophomore years he attended Vaughan Secondary School and led the team in scoring.

Andrew really started to flourish his sophomore year and the numbers prove it.  In 2010-2011, he helped the team earn a 44-1 record for the season.  They then went on to win the Ontario championship.  For his junior and senior years, Andrew Wiggins spent them at Huntington Prep School in West Virginia.  He continued to have great success on the court averaging a double-double with more than 24 points per game and 11 rebounds.  Andrew set a lot of records for Canadian basketball players such as being the first Canadian to receive the Naismith Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball.  He wrapped up his high school career in 2013 as the number one prospect going into college.

Andrew Wiggins decided to attend the University of Kansas to play basketball.  Although his tenure was short, only one year, he amassed some big numbers for the team.  He averaged a little over 17 points per game for the Jayhawks and had one really explosive game against West Virginia where he scored 41 points.  The only other Big 12 player to score more was Michael Beasley who scored 44 in one game back in 2008.

Andrew Wiggins vertical leap and explosive play did not go unnoticed by NBA scouts.  In fact, he was selected as the number one overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers.  His entry into the NBA was a little unusual for a number one pick.  He actually never played a game for Cleveland.  Andrew was immediately traded in a three team deal which sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves.  The Cavs used him to obtain Kevin Love and create the big three with Lebron James and Kyrie Irving.  Andrew Wiggins has been a really solid player for the Minnesota Timberwolves averaging more than 20 points per game and shooting 33% from the 3 point line and 76% from the free throw line.  He was awarded a hefty contract in 2017 that consisted of five years and $148 million dollars.  We are certain to see a lot more of Andrew Wiggins in the years to come.

The Best Andrew Wiggins Dunks You Will Ever See

Andrew Wiggins vertical leap is one of the top in the NBA.  With hops like that we are really surprised that he has not entered into the NBA Slam Dunk Contest yet.  However, we were able to find other slam dunk contests that he entered and he surely did not disappoint us.  Not only do we have some amazing Andrew Wiggins dunks but in high school he went up against some other major league jumpers such as Aaron Gordon and Jabari Parker.

Now we will add a little Zach Lavine into the mix.

Andrew Wiggins Vertical Jump Workout

Vertical Jump TestWe caught up with Andrew Wiggins during the off season at P3 Sports Complex where he was training his vertical leap.  He was doing an assortment of drills and heavy weight training to help him increase his explosiveness.

He was there with a fellow Canadian and another big time leaper Vince Carter.  As you can see from the photo Vince still has a lot of spring in his step as he as aged.  It is partially because of great God given athletic ability and the training exercises they have done at this facility.  Some of the training included heavy barbell squats, deadlifts and plyometric box jumps.  When doing weighted exercises the team at P3 had Andrew focusing on lifting as heavy of weight as possible and doing no more than 3 sets of  8 reps.  The 8th and final rep was supposed to be very difficult and almost at failure.

Doing these exercises to increase your vertical leap makes sense.  They all focus on the major muscle groups that one uses when he is in the jumping motion.  The quadriceps will play the biggest role out of all of them.  If you are looking to increase your vertical we suggest partnering up with the people over at 40InchVertical.net.  They have a team that will personally coach you to help you achieve the hops you have always wanted.  They have developed a system called The Jump Manual that many NBA teams have begun to implement into their training schedules.

The coaches even go so far as to create the perfect diet and nutrition plan for you.  They know in order to be the best athlete you can be you need to train on and off the court.  The diet plan is an area where all other vertical jump programs overlook.  If you invest your time and energy into the process they have created at The Jump Manual you can be sure you are getting the best of the best training available in this area.  So do yourself a favor and head over there to check out the system they have created.  You can even try it out for two months to see if it really works.  If it doesn’t work for you then simply ask for a refund.  They will give you every penny back.  We are certain that you will not have to do that if you really put in the effort and follow the plan because you will start seeing vast improvements in your vertical leap.

Til next time,
