Michael Jordan Vertical Is 48 Inches – An NBA Record!

Michael Jordan set a lot of records throughout his amazing career in the NBA. One record that you may not be aware of was caused by is his jumping ability and pure athletic talent. Michael Jordan vertical leap was measured at 48 inches and that is tied for the highest vertical jump of all time for a player in the NBA. His impressive vertical earned him the nickname Air Jordan and created an entire fashion brand around his name. The only other player to match Michael’s vertical leap is Darrell Griffith who played for the Utah Jazz for his entire career and was a star in the early 1980’s.

The Beginning of The Air Jordan Brand

Over the years Air Jordan by Nike has become a billion dollar brand.  Nike completely changed the fashion industry by making basketball shoes and sneakers trendy.  The first Jordan shoe was released in 1985 and was designed by Peter Moore and Tinker Hatfield who later on would design many more very successful shoe models for the Jordan brand.  The Air Jordan I was originally made in the red, and black colorway.  However, this shoe was banned by the NBA because it did not have enough white on them which was a requirement of shoes in the NBA at that time.  Nike, being the marketing geniuses that they are, used the excitement of their shoe being banned to give the impression that it was banned because it gave the person wearing them an unfair advantage over their competition and not because of the fact that the colors were not allowed in the NBA.

After banning the first colorway, Nike then released several more models that had more white in them so Michael could wear them on court.   The Air Jordan brand was an immediate success and the Jumpman logo was easily recognized world wide because of the excellent marketing of the product by Nike.  The Jordan brand wasn’t without its controversy and problems throughout the years.  The shoes and clothing became so popular that many young kids were being beaten up, robbed and assaulted for their sneakers and Nike clothing.  The tipping point came when a fifteen year old boy was choked to death and killed for his Air Jordan shoes.  The eventually caused many schools to implement dress codes and ban the shoes and Nike clothing from school grounds.  Nike also came into controversy over labor laws in several countries including China, Vietnam, and Indonesia where they had factories.  Many of the factory workers went on strike reporting that the working conditions were unsafe and they were not paid the proper wage.

Despite these hurdles the Jordan brand continued to thrive in the United States and Europe.  Today the brand sponsors 21 NBA players including Chris Paul, Jimmy Butler, Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin and others.

Michael Jordan’s Background and Quick Bio

Michael Jordan VerticalMichael Jeffrey Jordan was born on February 17, 1963.  Although he was born in Brooklyn, New York, his family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina when Michael was very young.  Michael was part of a rather large family and he was one of five children from his parents.  Michael’s parents were hard working and instilled good values into him which helped keep him on the right path through life.  As we know Michael grew up to become one of the most popular athletes of all time but things did not always come so easy to him.

In fact his sophomore year of high school, he failed to make the varsity team.  Being cut from the team was something that haunted him for many years to come.  He even mentioned it in his hall of fame speech to the NBA.  Michael worked hard on his game and his junior year he made the team and performed well enough to earn himself a scholarship to North Carolina.  At the University of North Carolina Jordan played under the coaching of Dean Smith.  Jordan played at UNC for 3 years, set many school records and led the team to an NCAA championship.

It may surprise you but Michael Jordan was not the number one pick in the NBA draft.  In fact, he wasn’t even selected second.  He was chosen by the Chicago Bulls at the number three spot in 1984.  That same year he was drafted, he played for the United States in the Olympics and brought home the gold medal for the country something he would do again when he played for the “Dream Team”.

Michael Jordan really turned the franchise around for the Chicago Bulls.  Before Jordan arrived the team was only averaging about 6,000 fans in their home games.  His competitive spirit, amazing leaping ability, and hang time brought new life to the organization.  He was named the Rookie of The Year and fans started coming back into the arena.

Jordan spent most of his second season, 64 games,  on the bench because of a broken foot.  However, on his return, which happened to be the first game of the playoffs against the Boston Celtics, he scored 49 points!  He immediately followed up that performance with another 63 points in game number two.  Needless to say the Celtics were not a fan of his return to the Bulls.  Michael led the Bulls to 2 3 peat championships during his career.  He is widely considered the greatest player of all time.  He was the first player to lead the league in both scoring and steals in the same season.  Michael never lost a championship series during his career.  Each time he played for the title he got it.  If it wasn’t for the time he took off after his father was killed he would have earned himself and the Bulls even more titles.
