Can Muggsy Bogues Really Dunk?

At Bball Addiction we have looked high and low for actual footage of a Muggsy Bogues dunk and we have not been able to find it.  When we searched Youtube all we found was Muggsy Bogues dunking in a NBA 2K video game.  Not exactly what we were looking for.  🙂  The reason we came up empty is because Muggsy Bogues never dunked in an actual NBA game during his career.

However, Coach Magazine did an official interview with him and directly asked Muggsy if he is actually able to dunk.  So what was his response?  He said “I never dunked in an NBA game…but I can dunk no problem.”  Is this the truth?  Yes, I believe it is.  Muggsy Bogues vertical leap was tested to be 44.3 inches by the NBA.  With a vertical leap like that, he should easily be able to throw it down.  Trying to do that over professional players in an NBA game is a different story.   Which is why we never saw him do it.

As a comparison, Spud Webb who was 5 foot 7 is the next shortest player to ever play in the NBA.  Spud had a 42 inch vertical leap and won the NBA Slam Dunk contest.  So what do these two players have in common that makes them leap so high?  Both of them have very strong legs and explosive power!  By training consistently and the right way, anyone can learn how to dunk.  We want to prove this is possible for you and later on we will recommend our top program to help you achieve this goal.

Muggsy Bogues Dunk: A Short Biography and What He Is Up To Now

Muggsy’s real name is Tyrone Curtis Bogues.  He was born on January 9, 1965 and grew up in Baltimore.  He kind of had a rough life his early years.  Muggsy grew up in the housing projects.  He was raised solely by his mother because his father was in prison.  He went to Dunbar High School which at the time was full of top NBA prospects.

In fact, his high school team had 4 future NBA players on it besides Muggsy.  David Wingate, Reggie Williams, and Reggie Lewis were all on the Dunbar High School team.  Obviously, the team was very good.  They had a combined record of 60-0 for Muggsy’s junior and senior years and were ranked number one in the nation.

With all of the success Muggsy Bogues had in high school he was heavily recruited in college.  He attended Wake Forest where he averaged 15 points and 10 assists per game.  Despite his size, he was an excellent defender as well.  By the time his college career was over he led the ACC in both steals and assists.

Another big accomplishment in his basketball career was when Muggsy Bogues represented the United States at the Olympic games.  The 1986 US National Team brought home the gold medal in the Olympics and the FIBA World Championship title.

Muggsy Bogues Heads To The NBA

In 1987 Muggsy Bogues entered the NBA draft was the 12th overall selection by the Washington Bullets.  Being selected 12th overall is quite an accomplishment considering there were a lot of other top players in that particular draft.  These include players such as David Robinson, Reggie Miller, and Scottie Pippen.  Muggsy only played for the Washington Bullets for one year.  He never really found his place with that organization.  He later mentioned in an interview that he believed they selected him for his small size rather than his basketball skills.  They were hoping he might draw crowds and sell more tickets which would be more profitable to the organization.

The following year he was picked up by the Charlotte Hornets where he seemed to fit in well.  Muggsy Bogues played 10 years with the Hornets and was one of the most popular players to ever play for them.  His solid numbers year in and year out pushed him to the top of the stat book.  Muggsy’s career stats for the Charlotte Hornets make him the career leader in minutes played, assists and steals.

Muggsy Bogues Height – How He Adjusted His Game

muggsy bogues heightMuggsy Bogues height of only 5′ 3 put him at a disadvantage against the big men that were in the NBA at the time.  What he did have was speed, agility, and a high basketball IQ.  Muggsy knew how to be in the right place at the right time in order to grab rebounds and make steals.  He also worked with the NBA coaches to learn how to position his body best in order to use his body weight for defensive purposes.

Surprisingly, when Muggsy played for the Washington Bullets the team not only had the shortest player to ever play in the NBA but they had the tallest player as well.  Manute Bol was Muggsy’s teammate who stood at a ridiculous 7 foot 7 inches tall!  Manute was not a very good player and once again the Bullets used him to sell tickets.

As you can see in the picture we have, Muggsy played against the GOAT (in our humble opinion) Michael Jordan.  We will just assume that most of the time Muggsy Bogues was not the primary defender against him. 🙂  Muggsy Bogues retired from basketball in 2000 and he finished with the Toronto Raptors.  So what is he up to now?

After basketball Muggsy Bogues worked in the real estate business from 2001 to 2005.  In 2005, he left real estate and began coaching basketball.  Other than that, he is retired and enjoying his life in Charlotte, North Carolina.
