We obviously can’t overlook Spud Webb’s height, that is what he is most famous for.  Standing at only 5 feet 6 inches, he was one of the shortest players to ever play in the NBA.  In fact, there were only two other players shorter than him to play professionally.  Want to know who?  Then you will have to continue reading below.  🙂

Spud Webb Vertical Leap – A Short Biography

Anthony Jerome Webb, better known as Spud Webb, was born on July 13, 1963 in Dallas, Texas.  Spud Webb was bornSpud Webb vertical into poverty.  He was raised in a three bedroom home and basketball was his source of inspiration.  Coming in at 5 feet 6 inches, Spud Webb would definitely not be considered tall.  However, he was able to use his quickness and incredible vertical leap to outplay his opponents.

Spud Webb made a large impact on his basketball team at Wilmer Hutchins High School by averaging 26 points per game throughout his career.  He threw down his first dunk his senior year and impressed everyone with his jumping ability.  Unfortunately, despite his impressive high school record, colleges showed little interest in Webb.  He received his first opportunity to play on a college basketball team when he attended Midland College (in Midland, Texas), where he led the Chaparrals to the junior college national title in 1982.  In the championship game, Midland defeated #1-ranked and previously unbeaten Miami-Dade North of Florida, 93-88, in double overtime.

Webb led all scorers in that game with 36 points, making 10 of 15 shots from the floor and 16 of 18 from the free-throw line.  His performance at the tournament earned Webb a write-up in Sports Illustrated and national attention.  In 1983, he was named an NJCAA All-American.  All of his college success caught the attention of North Carolina State University, who eventually offered Spud Webb a scholarship.

Spud Webb Enters The NBA

In 1985, Spud Webb entered into the NBA draft and was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the fourth round.  Webb played a total of 12 seasons in the NBA and he had a very solid career.  He played in 814 games and averaged 9.9 points. Spud Webb was, and still remains, the third shortest player to ever play in the NBA.  Only Earl Boykins and Muggsy Bogues were shorter.  Without a doubt, the highlight of Spud Webb’s career was in the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest.  With a vertical leap of 42 inches, he stole the show and to date is the shortest player to ever enter the dunk contest.

Spud Webb’s dunks included the elevator two-handed double pump dunk, the one-handed off the backboard one-handed jam, a 360-degree helicopter one-handed dunk, a 180-degree reverse double-pump slam, and finally, the 180-degree reverse two-handed strawberry jam from a lob bounce off the floor.  He defeated Dominique Wilkins with two perfect 150-point scores in the final round.
