Blake Griffin Vertical:  A Short Biography

blake griffin vertical leapBlake Austin Griffin was born on March 16th, 1989 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  Blake and his older brother Taylor were home schooled from first grade and until Taylor was in tenth grade and Blake was in eighth grade.  Throughout his childhood Blake was very involved in sports playing baseball, football and basketball.

During high school Blake and Taylor attended Oklahoma Christian School and played basketball under their father who was the head coach. They played together during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons and were able to win the state championship both years.  During Blake Griffin’s freshman year the team posted a perfect 29-0 record and he averaged 13.6 points per game.  Taylor Griffin then graduated an went off to school at the University of Oklahoma Sooners where Blake would soon join him.

Blake continued to have huge success during high school and led his team to four straight state titles.  During his four year run they posted an overall record of 106-6.  That’s pretty impressive : )  Blake Griffin was one of the most highly recruited athletes to ever come out of Oklahoma but he just couldn’t pass up the chance to once again play basketball with with brother.  So, he chose to play for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Although he didn’t win any national championships, Blake Griffin’s college career was a huge success as well.  As with most players, he steadily got better and better throughout his college career.  He played two years in college, averaged 18 ponts and 11 rebounds per game, and then decided to enter the NBA draft.

In 2009, Blake Griffin was selected as the first overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers.  Unfortunately, he would suffer a knee injury that would make him sit out the entire first season.  After rehab and working out consistently Blake Griffin vertical jump improved even more after his injury.  Since he missed his first season, Griffin was still considered a rookie during the 2010-2011 season.   In his debut game against the Portland Trail Blazers he scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

He then went on to set a Clippers record of the most points scored by a rookie in a game against the Pacers where he scored 47!  He participated in the 2011 NBA All Star Game and with his impressive vertical leap, won the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest as well.  Blake Griffin is a hard worker and a very talented player.  He will be a powerful force in the NBA for many years to come.

A Collection of the Best Blake Griffin Dunk Videos

Have you ever watched Clippers game and not heard them mention how ridiculously athletic Blake Griffin is?  That’s because the Blake Griffin dunks he has thrown down throughout his career have been awing crowds since he stepped into the NBA. It’s still early in his career and Blake Griffin is already being compared to some of the greatest power forwards like Karl Malone and Charles Barkley.  I think these comparisons are right on.  Blake just might have the best leaping ability and explosiveness of anyone in the NBA which gives him a distinct advantage on the court.

His athleticism combined with his strength make him a difficult force to stop.  With that being said, there are some areas for improvement as well such as his shooting ability.  In my opinion, in order for Blake Griffin to become a great superstar like Karl Malone and Charles Barkley he is going to have to improve his outside shooting.  Once this happens he will have officially taken his game to the next level.

Blake Griffin is young and has an incredible work ethic, on the court and in the gym.  That makes him a great leader and a valuable asset to the team. I have no doubt that Blake Griffin is heading for the NBA Hall of Fame.  The league is lucky to have such an incredible athlete and superstar.  Check out some of the Blake Griffin dunk highlights in the videos below.
